17813.8 miles.

So as you should all know, I just got back from my wonderful spring break in Asia.  It was not easy getting there.  First, it started with Robert being accepted into the exchange program at City University of Hong Kong from San Francisco State University.  Soon after, I had to save all my money from jobs during my last semester in college to pay for the trip since my parents refuse to pay for such things anymore.  I know, I must really like this guy if I started saving up almost a year in advance, I guess you can say I do.

Then I had to find a cheap flight, which luckily I did, $749 with tax and fees, and a place to stay, because the crazy school Robert decided to attend does not allow guests past midnight! Ridiculous, I say.  I found this little hostel located in Jordan, about a 10 minute  MTR ride from his school, little did I know that to get to the MTR you have to walk up and down a hill!. It was really cheap, but oh, so little!  I didn't even get pictures because I don't think there was enough room to stand in the room and photograph it.

Anyway, so during these past 10 days, I flew a total of 17813.8 miles, which was about 38.5 hours of sitting in an airplane, and I do not even want to THINK about the amount of travel time that included getting to and from the airport, sitting in the airport waiting, and immigration, oh how I hate immigration! Ah!  All in all, it was worth it.  The most amazing spring break ever.

DAY 1/2:

The first 2 days were spent in Hong Kong.  We ate and laid around and shopped and relaxed.  Dim sum was the first stop after I dropped my bags off at Robert's.

Then on Friday night, we went to my favorite airport in the world, Hong Kong International to fly to Phuket, Thailand. When we were filling out our arrival and departure forms for Thailand, we noticed there was a spot for a visa number.  PANIC, WE NEED A VISA TO GO TO THAILAND???  After 5 minutes for sheer fright, we realized that no, we don't need a visa to get into Thailand.  Haha, so when we get to Phuket, which is the first airport I've been to that is actually worse than LAX (for being one of the largest airports in the world, it is very ugly and old looking), we find the driver we arranged with our hotel.  It takes us about 45 minutes to get to Kata Beach where we stayed for the 4 nights.

It was about 1 AM by the time we got to the hotel, so we hit the hay and planned our next day.

DAY 3:

We took the walk down to the beach, which was supposed to be a 5 minute walk, but we got distracted by all the shops and food and kind of got lost.  The beach is behind all these buildings so you have to walk through alleys that have small "TO THE BEACH" signs that we totally missed.

We finally got to the beach and ordered two chaise lounges for the day, it cost about 200 baht, about 6 dollars.  So cheap.

Then we played in the water and had lunch.  When we returned to our hotel about 4 hours later, we decided to get mani/pedis!  For the both of us, including tip, it was 450 baht, 15 dollars! Everything is so cheap!

DAY 4:

We decided to rent a motor scooter for the day and drive around to the other beaches which were only 7-15 minutes away.  I am surprised I did this because I got on Robert's motorcycle once and rode around the block and almost DIED!  But motor scooters are a lot nicer.  I stayed on fine and didn't have to cling on for dear life.

We went to Karon Beach, which was just north of Kata.  It was emptier and more calm than Kata, but a lot hotter.  It's not surrounded by trees and buildings so the sand was hot, hot, hot.  We also got lounges and hung out around for a little.

We left for lunch and told the man not to give away our lounges, but we never returned because I got sick!!!  But not before we went to Patong, which was not cool.  People were hounding us to get jet skis, and it was dirty, and someone tried to sell us pot!

DAY 5:

My sickness took over for the rest of day 4, and part of day 5.  But I bravely got dressed and went to lay on the beach.  I don't think I took any pictures because I felt awful.  So we went back to our room early and rented Pinocchio from the front desk and ordered room service.

DAY 6:

Our last day in Thailand, we woke up super early, and had breakfast.  We walked to the beach in normal clothes and realized we wanted to get into the water before we had to fly out.  So we go changed and played in the water for a few hours.

DAY 7:

Back in Hong Kong, this was the day we were planning on going to Disneyland, but we didn't.  I forget why, and I kind of forget what we did.  Walk around, eat, take the MTR.  We went to this breakfast place and helped this Canadian family get food because they were confused.  I also bought our Disneyland tickets at Circle K, which is like 7-11.  If you bought two tickets, they gave you a FREE umbrella!!!  I do not know where the picture of the umbrella is, so you will have to wait and look for it on fb.

Then I'm pretty sure we looked at shops, ate lunch at this yummy tapas place and took a nap.

I believe we also went down to the pier area.  Robert wanted a night picture with Bruce Lee, but he was boarded up.  Instead, we took a lot of pictures of us at the pier, which I also cannot locate.

The shopping center there is soooooo nice!  I refuse to return to Hong Kong until I can shop there without have a heart attack from being broke.

DAY 8:

DISNEYLAND.  So we have breakfast and go to Disneyland Hong Kong.  They have their own MTR line that takes you right to the park.  Anaheim needs this.  It's like less than 3 dollars to get to the park.  No fifteen dollar parking here!  And the train is soooo cool.

The park is teeny-tiny.  Only consists of Tommorrowland, Fantasyland, and Adventureland.  And the only ride in Adventureland was the jungle cruise... really?? Tomorrowland had my two favorites: Space Mountain and Buzz Lightyear's Astroblasters!!! Fantasyland had this Winnie the Pooh ride that took our picture!!

We also stayed for the fireworks, which were nice and short.  They let you sit on the floor here! So much nicer and such a better view!

What a wonderful place.

DAY 9:

We have breakfast and walk around the city.  Then we got tired and took a nap.  And Robert decided to make desserts, so we ate that and went to Causeway Bay to meet up with Robert's cousin and his girlfriend.  We ate at Din Tai Fung, which they have here in Arcadia.  It is PRICEY, but enjoyable.

After we had dessert at Crumbs, even though we already had dessert at dinner... haha.  Crumbs is this yummy place that has light ice cream, that resembles frozen yogurt and this crumbly topping.  Yum.

While walking around on the streets, we run into the Hong Kong version of AXE girls.  We told them we'd do their little project if they look a picture of us, and they did, so we did.  We went into this weird room off the street and the result was this:

Haha, so weird, I can't even explain.

DAY 10:

I had left all my luggage and stuff at Robert's dorm since our room was so small, and we had gotten back late the night before so I wasn't allowed in his building.  So we had to wake up early so I could pack my stuff really fast and head to the airport.  Then I left.

So sad.  But what a wonderful time.  Thanks for a wonderful week and a half, Robby!

things i love about life

In no particular order:
  • When you get home and your dog is sooooo happy to see you.
This is an example what my dog, Louie, looks like when he is excited and running.
  • Cheap. effective instant coffee.
This is one of my favorites.
  • When you wake up from a nap and you're in such high demand that there are text messages spilling out of your inbox.
  • The scent of magic and music of enchantment when you get off the tram in Downtown Disney.
This is exactly what you see when walking off the tram.
  • Left-overs.
  • The feeling of finally relieving yourself after holding your pee FOREVER.
  • When you decide to buy something and you find out at the register it is actually on sale!
  • Getting A's.

  • Receiving snail mail.
  • When people don't listen and you are finally able to say, "I told you so."
  • Hugs from Robert.
This is as close of a hug picture I could find of us, which, I say, is a good thing.
  • Pay day.
  • Loud family get togethers.
  • Little, red facebook notifications.
I found this on google images.
  • When you haven't left for school yet and your professor emails you to tell you class is canceled.
  • When you hang out with babies and toddlers and they become attached to you for the day, but only for one day.
  • When you see a teacher from way back when at the grocery store and he still remembers you.
  • When you hang out with old friends you haven't seen in ages and nothing has changed.
  • Taking exams 3 days early to go on extended spring break!
See ya when I get back from Asia!!!

3 months shy of a year.

Exactly 4 years ago, I was living the life in my giant dorm room in Southwest (best dorm EVER.)  I'm pretty sure this is when I went through my homesick phase, the only time I had ever been homesick since I was like 10.  I don't remember many details, but I do remember we drank too much, studied too little, and had the perfect amount of fun.

A year (in 3 months) ago is when it all ended, college was over.  I remember that day as boring, very boring at first, damn whoever convinced me to go to convocation.  Then I remember my first name not being called when I got my diploma, but whatever, I'm over it, kind of.  After it was a whirlwind of photos and all the sudden it had ended.  The end of an era.  It was time for us to drink champagne out of glass bowls stolen from the dining hall because we had already packed up the lives we had built in our tiny, overpriced, on-campus apartment.

This picture of our empty apartment truly saddens me.  I will never be able to see UC 10 again.

Since that day, May 15, 2010, life has changed so much.  Who knew how different life could be in less than a year.  I spent my summer doing absolutely nothing and live the life of a true post-grad.  And now I am here, in Pomona, CA, going to school, yet again.  I feel like time here has actually passed faster than it did a mere 4 years ago when I was a bright-eyed 18 year old.

I don't even know what to say, when I started school here, it was like being a freshmen in college all over again, minus the dorms.  We partied all weekend, went to class, went to lab, and partied all over again.  Same deal, different place, different people.  I love all the people I met here, we all became so close, so fast, but I miss all the people I met in undergrad.  I miss my study group, I miss my lab partners, and I miss my roommates.  Things will never, ever be as they were when you are living the life as an undergrad.  We ended up in all different places, SF, SJ, Davis, LA, the Netherlands, and life is so weird without them.

Who knows what the next year will bring...

proud moment of the week.

So I have this reputation around town, as being the pretty good, and when I say pretty good, I mean REALLY GOOD at Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters in Disneyland's Tommorrowland.  And I do not exaggerate today.  Before I'd be alright, you know, very proud of my score, but only hitting levels 4 (Space Scout) and on a good occasion level 5 (Ranger, First Class).  But this last time I went to Disneyland, I got as high as you could possibly get: LEVEL 7: GALACTIC HERO.

Legit.

To be fair, the game was stopped for a little bit, but it was not stopped anywhere significant.  But on my own I already had a score upwards over 300,000 within the first minute, while my partner in my cart (no offence) only had around 30,000, so I'd like to say this was all skill.  Not many can max out the point counter halfway through the game.  I even took a break because my arm hurt and took this picture:

Anyway, to my delight, Disneyland understood this momentous time in my life and asked for my initials:

TOP TEN and this was only half and hour before the parked closed, so I would like to say this is quite a feat.

Sadly, Disney has been disappointing me because the past two times I went my picture was either deleted and recreated with cartoons, example:

Or didn't get sent at all, which is what happened this last time with my amazing score :(

But not to worry, I have learned to always have some back ups just in case.  I needed proof or else no one would believe this score, not even the people with me.

See, I'm wearing my tan jacket that can be seen on me all day in the park.  When you're this impressive, they slideshow your pic on the big screens when you walk off the ride.  Along with this:

Only one person beat me all day.  Number 7, not too shabby.  Pretty good proud moment of the week I'd say.  I still brag about it.  Well not really, but I am right now, but let me gloat because this will probably never happen again.

LGM, I would love to meet you one day.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Believe it or not, there was once a day when I was not well liked by everyone.  Haha, hard to imagine, I know.  During my junior year of high school, you know back when my xanga was poppin', I got a rude message on one of my posts.  Who knows what it said, but it was this long paragraph about what an awful person I am.  I vaguely remember stuff about me being a lesbian, but in particular, this fan of mine was attacking my white-washed complex.  Then I stumbled upon my hate page.

Yes, I had a certified hate xanga because I was not Asian enough.

At my high school of 3200+ people, 85% of the students were Caucasian.  There were Asian people, I just didn't hang out with them much.  Was it my fault that I did not fit in with the Asians that were present at my school?  Don't get me wrong, I had Asian friends, I like Asian people and have nothing against my own kind, I just didn't hang out with the "Asian group".  The group I'm referring to consisted of the only 20 Asians not in AP classes.  At lunch, they hung out right outside the girl's bathroom!  And if you've ever met me, you would know that I have major issues about food being anywhere near a restroom.

I hung out with a wonderful group of young ladies, race was negligible.  It didn't matter to me where their families were from over 100 years ago, they were a big part of my high school experience and I love each and everyone of them for it.

So instead of lunching by the restroom or going to Asian club meetings, I was off gossiping, or being involved with the school.  And for this, I was "hated".  This hate xanga featured a headline that I will always remember: Someone slap Jennifer and tell her she's not white.  I would like to make one thing clear, I never thought I was white!  I have indeed looked in the mirror and have seen my jet black hair, lightly tanned skinned, and dark, little eyes when I smile.  I was under no confusion on what I was, I was CHINESE!!  Just like a couple billion other people out there.

I ate rice for almost ever meal.  I spoke Chinese at home to my parents (on occasion) and always to my grandparents.  I grew up with the culture and values instilled in every Asian-American.  I took off my shoes when entering a house.  I drove a Honda.  I mean, I couldn't possibly get more Asian if I had tried.

At the time of the discovery of the blog, I found it laughable.  I was totally flattered that someone spent their time thinking about how much they hated me so much they actually took time out of their day and dedicated a whole website to me!  I mean, I'm still kind of flattered, it's kind of a big deal, but I am now more sad for this person and for people out there just like him/her (to this day, I have absolutely no idea who made that site).  How can people in our society feel that race has anything to do with how a person should be thought of and treated?  I am Chinese because I was born to Chinese parents.  I am not Chinese because I choose to be.  I do not think Chinese people are any better than any other race, but I do not think they are any less of people either.  Being Chinese is what I am, not who I am.

I am very proud of who I am and where I come from, but I feel that if I was raised in another family I would also find these same ideals I live by.  I am proud of being Chinese because it is a part of me, I just don't think I have to be in the Asian Club, or in this case, eat lunch by the girl's restroom to prove it.

HAPPY CHINESE NEW YEAR!!!
whether you are chinese, white, purple, or green :)

march- the month of spring break and amazingness.

So if you aren't friends with me on facebook, which I kind of highly doubt because I think a total of 3 people read this blog and I know that each and everyone of you guys are my friends on facebook.  Well anyway, if you aren't my friend on facebook then I want to take some time out of my day to tell you about the wonderful month of March.

See March is smack dab in the middle of my semester, which is the longest semester known to mankind.  It started on January 3, 2011, and does not end until May 20, 2011.  That is almost 5 whole months, whoever designed the school system here is seriously deranged.  That is beside the point, the point I am trying to make is that in March, wonderful things will happen.

First off, in the whole entire month of March I only have one exam.  Count that, ONE!  I mean I've only been in school for 2 weeks and already have 2 and counting, so one in a month is marvelous!

Second, during the first weekend of March, my best and truest friend is coming to visit and we will be doing very sophisticated and grown up things like going to the theatre and Disneyland!  Yes, so what if the show is about puppets?  The show info says that no one under the age of 5 is allowed in, so surely it is very mature and for adults only.

I don't actually know what this show is about.  I've been to a few shows where I have not one clue what it is about and have enjoyed every production except one, West Side Story.  Do not see that.

Then I plan on recreating this moment:

If you don't recognize the white girl in the picture, she's not some random.  That is Laura, my best and truest friend, posing with me in front of my Southern California residence.

After this already memorable weekend, I will spend countless hours in my room, at my desk studying for my one exam.  As soon as that finishes, I plan on returning to the theatre and watching this amazing classic.

I have not seen it yet, but I already know that it will be fantastic.

Then, my favorite part of the spring semester comes, SPRING BREAK.  I usually spend my spring breaks in glamorous locals, such as, Disneyland, Cancun, or my mom's house.  But this year I will be visiting this guy:

I have booked myself a high class hostel in Hong Kong and plan to eat as much Asian food as I can.  I will be taking this 18+ hours flight alone because I always seem to fly alone, I don't remember the last time I actually knew someone on a plane.  I dread, dread, dread the flight, but I am sooo excited to get another stamp in my passport!

I have a few things to check off on my list while I'm there.

Check-off list:
1. Go to Disneyland Hong Kong

That's about it.

But while I'm there we're flying to Phuket, Thailand.  I always pronounce it "fuk-it", you know like when you're mad about something, but Robert says it "foo-ket", I don't know who is right. Well I'm staying at this gorgeous hotel off Kata Beach, Sugar Palm Grand Hillside, for only 48 dollars a night, and that includes breakfast every morning!

I think that by the end of March I will be dirt poor, but it will all be worth it.  So, so, sooooooo excited!
